Are you using a modern version of Blender 3D, but struggling to follow along with older Procedural Texture Tutorials (and even some older Geometry Node Tutorials) that use the Musgrave Texture Node? I know I've struggled. Well, struggle no more!

Introducing Musgrave Redux, a simple Node Group Asset Pack that recreates the Musgrave Texture Node as a Node Group in both Shader Nodes and Geometry Nodes. Previously, this wasn't even possible in Shader Nodes, and rather complicated to do in Geometry Nodes. But now, with the release of Blender 3D version 5.0, and its new node features, it's now doable and I've done it. It's available for both Shader Nodes, as shown in the cover image above, and for Geometry Nodes, as shown below:

And if you're still using Blender 3D version 4.5, or 4.4, or 4.3, or even 4.2, worry not! I've also created a simpler version with a Musgrave Params Node Group, which does the math of converting the old Musgrave Parameter Values to the new Noise Texture Node's Parameters. When coupled with a Noise Texture Node, it can effectively recreate the results generated by the original Musgrave Texture Node with the same Parameter Values.

The Musgrave Params Node Group is also available in the Blender 5.0 version, and is even available for use with Compositor Nodes in ALL versions!

The Musgrave Params Node Group(s) can be used in the same way in ALL versions in both Shader Nodes and Geometry Nodes as well. Depending on your Blender 3D Asset Settings, using the Musgrave Params Node Group(s) might even be a better choice to make your own project(s) smaller and more efficient than using the full Musgrave Texture Node Group(s).


WHAT YOU WILL GET

  • Musgrave Params C Node Group (All versions) for Noise Texture parameter conversion in Compositor Nodes.
  • Musgrave Params G Node Group (All versions) for Noise Texture parameter conversion in Geometry Nodes.
  • Musgrave Params S Node Group (All versions) for Noise Texture parameter conversion in Shader Nodes.
  • Musgrave Texture G Node Group (5.0+ versions) for recreating the Musgrave Texture in Geometry Nodes.
  • Musgrave Texture S Node Group (5.0+ versions) for recreating the Musgrave Texture in Shader Nodes.

All Node Groups feature Hover Descriptions for themselves and their Parameters, which match the original descriptions from the original Musgrave Texture Node. Their interior node trees are neatly organized and easy to understand if you want to explore inside them and how they work. I've done my best to ensure a high quality product for end users.

All Blender 3D files also contain additional non-asset materials and an extra non-asset geometry nodes modifier to demonstrate some example uses of various Musgrave/Noise Texture Parameter Settings and their resulting patterns. These are shown in the some of the above images. Feel free to open the files directly and play around in the Geometry Nodes workspace to get a feel for how these assets can be used.


HOW TO INSTALL

  1. Download exactly ONE of the available files for your corresponding version of Blender 3D:BlenderRedux4.2.blend for Blender 3D versions 4.2, 4.3, 4.4, & 4.5BlenderRedux5.0.blend for Blender 3D versions 5.0+
  2. Place the downloaded file inside your Blender Assets Folder/Directory, as specified in the File Paths Section of Blender 3D's Preferences:
